Part II: The computer is running too slow sometimes / The computer is sometimes slow in starting up1) You may have too many old files in your computers accumulated over a long period of time. Clearing off these junk files or temporary files will help to boost up speed of your computer.
- Go to My Computer, right-click on drive C and click Properties. In the General tab, click on Disk Cleanup and then Ok button. You will be able to remove temporary Internet files, empty Recycle Bin and remove Windows temporary files.
- Open Window Explorer, under Drive C go to Windows or WINNT folder. Clear all files in Prefetch folder.
2) You data in your computer may be fragmented or broken into pieces. This will make the data or files harder to be retrieved or saved. You can run disk defragmentation to speed up the access of data. Go to Accessories via Start, then select system folder and look for File Defragmenter.
3) You should check the integrity of the files stored in your hard disk. You can detect and repair disk errors using the window Error Checking utility. When you use your hard drive, it develops bad sectors which will slow down the hard disk performance. Bad sectors make data writing difficult.
- Go to My computer, right-click drive C and then click Properties. In the Tools tab, click Check Now button. Tick all the dialog box and then click Start.

4) Windows Registry is a directory which stores settings for window operating system. It holds information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, preferences, etc. Changes are reflected and stored in the Windows Registry whenever an user makes changes to the computer settings, file association, system policies, or installs new software. Overtime the Windows Registry will hold a lot of obsolete information. If the Registry keys get messed up, you will have serious computers errors, and you computer will be running very slow. You need to run Registry repair software to remove obsolete keys and to scan for errors. The registry repair software will remove old entries and fix any error as well as compact the registry directory.
5) You computer may be infected with Spyware or Adware, These are software that installed secretly on a personal computer to take partial control over the user’s interaction with the computer. Spyware will secretly monitor the user’s behavior and collect various types of personal information and relays it back to the advertisers. It can also interfere with user control of the computer by installing additional software or redirecting to a 3rd party website. Spyware is running at the background and will slow down your computer tremendously. You need to employ a spyware detection software to detect and clear up spyware. Update spyware definition file before you scan your computer each time is a must.
